Why that is none other than LoGH List maintainer (and AX Karaoke coordinator) Hank Wong! I didn't know in advance that Hank was doing this costume or I would have more strongly considered bringing mine as well. When he showed up he said he was prepared to salute me if I had been in my costume. :) I got some more detailed photos of the costumes at this panel, so once I can get them developed and scanned I will post them on my web page or somewhere. I also took some moderately detailed notes at the panel Q&A which I will write up as soon as I have time (right now I am trying to catch up on work plus read all the accumulated emails since I have been away). Since some of you may be wondering about my semi-cryptic note before the con and why I didn't wear my costume, I'll mention the little "surprise" I planned to announce now. After the panel I spoke briefly to Mr. Kikukawa about a plan I've been hatching for some time. Next year the annual World Science Fiction Convention ("Worldcon") will be helpd in my hometown, Philadelphia. My ex college roomie is now the president of the Phialdelphia Science Fiction Society which will be hosting it and I know 1 or 2 other people in the top staff. Basically what I want to do is a major promotional push for LoGH at Worldcon, to begin hooking the literary SF fans into this series to begin spreading it among their ranks, and to begin building the kind of letter writing fan base we would need to demand a broadcast of the series on something like SciFi channel or make a US DVD release feasible (more on this idea from the panel writeup to come). My friends are willing to help set up a panel and put LoGH on the con video schedule, but only if I can obtain OFFICIAL permission from the rights holders (which would be Tokuma) to show it. It is for this purpose I wanted to talk to Mr. Kikukawa, and why I didn't wear my costume (I didn't think it would look good to be discussing setting up a major promotional push while looking like a crazed fanboy, even if it is a spectacularly well dressed crazed fanboy ^_~). Mr. Kikukawa said he couldn't grant full permission himself but advised me on who to try and contact, and I gave him my address and contact information to pass along. I also got a little helpful advice on the side from Scott Frazier on how to break through to Tokuma, which I will need. Hopefully I can get the permissions I need because I think this may be one of the best chances we'll get to break LoGH out of the fairly tiny anime fan circle in which it is currently known. One hopeful thing for me was that the first half of the video shown at the AX LGH panel was a LGH background primer and production report, which is *EXACTLY* the kind of thing I need to be able to quickly explain the background of the show to people! I am really really hoping I can get permission to show that at Worldcon, especially since at the panel it was mentioned that this part of the video probably wouldn't see any regular video release in Japan (it was a TV special).
