Is this thread going to turn into another Star Trek vs. SDF-1? ------Original Message------ From: "Lee Thompson"To: logh@soda.CSUA.Berkeley.EDU Sent: March 12, 2001 3:39:37 PM GMT Subject: Re: [LoGH] Babylon 5 vs Galactic Empire On Mon, 12 Mar 2001 00:01:11 -0600, you wrote: > > But if you just mean small numbers of ships, I figure the Empire has the > > advantage in terms of range, mobility, weapons, fighters, and tactics and > > organization while only the Vorlons, Shadows, Rangers, and Mimbari have > > better defenses: shields, and jamming devices. > > Hmmm, not quite so simple- the LGH ships have weak side shields which > make them vulnerable to the side shots and small craft/fighters. Actually LGH ships have non existent side shields and weak/experimental forward shields. B5 doesn't really use the concept of shields; it just uses the concept of sensor/targeting sensor jamming. > Given > the B5 advanced races' ability to warp in without a gate and LGH tech > seems to have bottlenecks that are navigational-related, and the B5 > types may be able to do a surprise Pearl Harbor and really tear up a > fleet before superior numbers are felt. > > On the other hand LGH ships are firing at 5 million kilometers rather > than the close-in B5 ranges, so presumably their lasers are at least > equal to the B5 ships' beam weapons and probably better long-range > targeting. Frankly I think show vs show 'military' comparisons usually don't work well because they have different doctrines behind ship design, different theories about FTL technology and so forth. In the end it sounds too much like "My dad can beat up your dad." -- Lee Thompson thompsonl@logh.net ______________________________________________ FREE Personalized Email at Mail.com Sign up at http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup
