what's also interesting is that the FPA ships recognize _individual_
imperial warships. at the battle of astarte, when one of the imperial
battleships(?) is on yang's viewscreen, the bridge communicator/talker
announces it as the kirentin(sp?).
either the FPA fleet can distinguish at least the capital warships from
visual only, or FPA intelligence has cracked imperial IFF codes and can
read the imperial fleet's own electronic tracking signatures similar to
what the air traffic controllers use to identify planes. (or military air
intercept controllers use to identify friendly/foe (IFF) aircraft on their
radar.)
or, they simply have a really thick copy of jane's space-warships guide
on the bridge. ;)
