Don't know #1. Someone with a LoGH map with distance?

120 MW = a few hundred gigajoules of energy.(300~ ?,
physics major with the W->J conversion?) So even if
the beam lost 95% of its energy at max range, that is
still a few gigajoules of energy. I am assuming a 1
sec firing period.

Maybe it is some kind of particle field held together
with a magnetic field? The small particles(prism
sand? fake diamonds with iron crystals?)will difuse
and consume beam energy. And the Magnetic field allow
the positioning of the defense field? Maybe that is
why they hate it when people shot up their tail pipe.
The engine output cause problems with the defense
field and reduce a layer of protection from enemy
fire.
