yet another nonsense about ranks

Hi,
>Obviously the Japanese grades have Japanese names for them, but weren't
>they based on western ranks to begin with?
I guess I don't know that much about history but my personnal guess is that
it is a mere evolution of former (before Meiji) grades. Any idea about
this, someone? (just for personnal culture)
>So a translation of "Admiral"
>for "Gensui" would not be 100% inaccurate. Outside of WW2 (for obvious
>reasons), I am not familiar with Japanese military history, so correct
>me if I'm wrong.

Neither do I. I guess it is not entirely inaccurate.

>what really confuses me most is the insignia worn by the Imperial officers.

Really? I did not remark any mistake (great compared to Z Gundam)

I surrender to your arguments about using american grades since it appears
that it is more convenient to most of you (I don't want to say I am not
familiar only with american grades, it would be nearly as complicated for
me to use French ones)

So, let me try to match each grade to the Japanese name.
Am I right understanding this :

Japanese
Translation # stars Insignia in series

(Imperial)

Gensui (Reuentale in the 3rd season) Grand Admiral 5
Cape and "I dunno how to call it" on the shoulders

Jo-Kyu Taisho (Reuentale in the 2nd season) Admiral 4
3 stripeswith an over complicated collar (is it what it is
called?)

Taisho (Muller in the 2nd) Vice Admiral
3 3 stripes
Chujo (Reuentale at the beginning) Rear Admiral 2
2 stripes on shoulder
Shosho
Commodore 1 1 stripe on shoulder
Taisa (Sieg at the Beginning) Colonel?????
3 stripes but the uniform is different from above grades.
Chusa (Poplan in the 3rd)
Lt-Colonel???? 2 stripes
Shosa (Greenhill at the end of the 2nd) Commandant????
1 stripe
Tai (Greenhill beginning of the 2nd) Lieutenant????
dunno in the empire
Chui (Julian after he gets promoted) ?????????
Shoi (Julian when he enters the army) ???????????

By the way, does anybody know what do you call a JunSho (Yang at the
Beginning)?

Please, correct me if I am wrong (seems like I use this sentence very
often. Sorry about my english vocabulary being so poor)

>Other than the fact that the Valkyries are extended and releaased very
>much in Macross movie fashion from the ships, don't notice anything really
>in your face. Kircheis might look like that one guy (don't remember his
>name) from Char's Counterattack.
If you are talking about Amuro Rei (the only red-haired guy), I do not
think that there is any connection. At least THIS is not inspired from
Gundam. I would not say so from Reinhart and Sha Aznaburu as I told
before...
But is there some other "in-joke" like the piyo-piyo apron which I do not
think is a common feature of Japanese aprons (or at least not before Maison
Ikkoku, I think.)

The Valkyries are probably such.
Anyway, I think there the humor in GED (sorry, I should say LOGH but can't
get used to it) is pretty limited.

David.
