Hello,

In fact Oberstein is willing to sacrifice his life if it can safe-guard
the interest of the new dynasty. In the last chapter of the novel, he
"deliberately" lures the last Earth-ists to attack the palace on Phezzan
so that they are wiped out by the guards under Kessler's command. He
himself misleads the assassins into believing that his office is the
Kaiser's bedroom, "ensuring" that their bomb kills him instead of his
master and Kaiserin Hilda, and so eliminating the last danger to the new
dynasty!

Let me remind all the people interested in Oberstein the fact that
Oberstein is hated by Reinhard's lieutenants and feared by his ministers
not because he is not loyal to Reinhard, but because he is too loyal to
Reinhard and "always uses his loyalty as a weapon against them,
supposing anyone of them is the next to rebel against Reinhard" (says
Marshal Mittermeyer).
