Well I am all in favor of having such exposition woven into the plot if at all possible, since that is always better than the usual boilerplate pre-history narrative most people skip over to get to the story. However it wasn't obvious to me that such an exposition was coming, and there seemed to be a tacit assumption that I should have some idea of what the hell is going on.
