At my university's anime club, (Cal-Animage Alpha, 1994-1995) when they showed LoGH, the reaction was so positive that the club added a special LoGH-only showing to the schedule. So there was a saturday afternoon where they showed like 8 episodes back-to-back (episodes 5-12, I think). And it was well-attended too. Don't know what year you were president at your uni's anime club, but I guess the intelligence level of anime fandom has gone down a lot in the past year or two... > popular in the US.
