What people were criticizing was not shoujo anime (such as FY), but
mahou shoujo, a subgenre. One of our main points against the genre was
that one of it's defining characteristics was the excessive "cute and
fluffy factor". For myself, while having nothing specific against
cuteness, I cannot really respect a show that serves no other purpose than
to be cute.

Or something like that.
