Great summary of the Anime Expo '99 Galactic Heroes panel, Walter.
While I was too busy at the con to see both English episodes in their
entirety, I was equally impressed with the dubbing work -- and I was the
last one to expect anything good from a Japanese-produced dub! It's
equally surprising that such a respectable dubbing job could've been
produced at Ocean Studios, the Vancouver studio responsible for all the
abominable Viz Video dubs... It seems that Mr. Kikukawa's quality control
made all the difference.
I spoke briefly with Kikukawa in the lobby later on, and figured his
comments might be of interest to the ML. Apart from the companies that
have approached Tokuma about securing North American distribution rights
for LoGH, it seems Mr. Kikukawa had been busy over the week leading up to
the con pitching Galactic Heroes to some of the major American
broadcasters. "We showed the English pilot to studio executives at Fox and
the Sci-Fi Channel," he told me in Japanese, "but of course they weren't
interested." It struck me that this man is the perfect person to be in
charge of the international marketing for Galactic Heroes: he has a lot of
respect for the work and he truly wants to see it available to English
audiences, without significant compromises, but at the same time he is
realistic about the difficulties inherent in marketing it to the US. When
it comes to American distribution, he is neither as naive as most anime
producers nor as easily discouraged. If we ever get to see Galactic Heroes
released in English at all, it will be thanks to this man.
So, anyone else have comments on the pilot dub?
