Well, the general rule among more "ethical" anime fans is to discourage fan subtitling and distribution of series that are commerically available through one of the US distributors. Before a show is officially licensed in the USA, though, it is considered "OK" to fansub and distribute it even if that is still wrong under the letter of the law, as long as one is willing to pull the subs once the series becomes commerically available. >From a purely technical legal perpective all fansub distribution is illegal, however most anime series would never become popular over here and therefore be licensable properties unless someone fansubbed them first. Would Fushigi Yuugi be as popular as it is if Tomodachi Anime hadn't been popularizing it in fandom first? As to LoGH, there is no commercial release of it here on the horizon for the foreseeable future. It just isn't popular or well-recognized enough. And that won't change unless we try to hook more people into it with the fansubs; especially this is a series that for most is unwatchable without fansubs (a trait not the case with more simplistic humor anime such as Ranma). At the AX99 panel one attendee (kind of thoughtlessly) asked Mr. Kikukawa (the producer) what he thought about fansubs, and Kikukawa replied, "As a producer I cannot officially be in favor of such things, but I am aware that if these did not exist there would probably not be anyone attending this presentation." That's just my opinion, I could be wrong. ============================================================================== "Zu jeder Zeit, an jeder (sic) Ort, bleibt das Tun | Walter Amos der Menschen das gleiche..." - Galactic Heroes II | amos(at)sedl.org
