I will certainly grant that no doubt elements of the military actions in LoGH
leave much to be desired. However in terms of the totality of science
fiction, especially military science fiction, produced for the screen I think
it nonetheless still stands head and shoulders above almost everything.

However I would agree with Harold Ancell that the main point of LoGH is not so
much the minutia of the battles but rather the larger questions of societal
organization that are raised. Much as I am a fan of the Empire stylistically,
I fear that most of the best and most relevant points about modern political
life are raised by Yang.

(It's a pity that we aren't gonna have any more subtitles after episode 34 for
some time, since some of the most insightful commentary about life in a
democracy I've seen in the entire series appears in the early episodes of 2nd
series. Especially when contrasted with some comments of Pat Buchanan's that
I have recently seen - I should forward the relevant ones to this list later)

Hey, why pick on me?

BTW I should remark that despite a general interest in the subject I can't
comment nearly as authoritatively on Roman orators or political life. My
knowledge of Roman history comes from the following sources (in order):

1) I, Claudius
2) A paperback history of Roman society from ancient times through Constantine
which I read some months ago which I can't find at the moment or I'd quote the
author and title.
