it was not an uncommon practice in europe, either, at least not for
the germans whom the empire is modeled after. in fact, only a couple of
years ago sotheby's auctioned an estate which included a small locket
containing some of beethoven's hair.
on a side note: i seem to recall reading that the buyer donated a
strand of beethoven's hair (w/follicle) to a research org who was busy
trying to unravel the "genius" gene. it was impressive how many
talented artists/musicians, great scientists and visionaries in history
they'd collected DNA from... and also a little GATTACA-ish.
maybe the inferior genes exclusion law isn't that far in our future
after all? :)
