This letter contains spoilers for the end of LOGH. You've been warned. S P O I L E R S P A C E S P O I L E R S P A C E I was reading some of the recent messages, and I noticed that one person wrote that they didn't like the fact that Reinhart went back on his vow not to have his son inherit his postition. While that may be true, it got me thinking at this point, what were his other options? There was no system in place for a democratic election. He could have appointed Mittermeyer, but I think a lot of the older noble families would have opposed that, and it would have eventually ended with another civil war. Who else would have been held enough power to be respected? The way I see it, any other sucessor would have quickly ended with a coup or civil war. Hilda is an efficient administrator, but because she's a woman I doubt she would have been followed simply as a dowager empress. But with an 'heir', giving her a position as regent gives her the authority with the apparent security of knowing that she's a temporary leader and that there's a male leader on the way. I don't think Reinhart was originally planning to die before he reached middle age, and probably with more time he could have set up some kind of stable sucessor. But considering how things went, I just don't know what else he could have done. Does anyone have any other ideas? Jennifer jcaliff@ev1.net http://users.ev1.net/~jcaliff/
