Probably for the same reason why you don't spank a toddler with
an axe.
Ground combat can cause less overall damage than orbital
bombardment.

There are references to ground combat, but since it's a show about
space navies duking it out it tends to not get covered as much.

Well, have you seen the 1st Season of LoGH. Particularly the
Imperial Civil War episodes?
