I tend to agree that Oberstein *behaves* like a robot. Given that - despite
an obvious talent and intelligence (witness his recognition of Yang's trap)
- he was unable to gain the respect of his superiors - not because of his
behavior but because of his cybernetic eyes (I cite the novels in this
instance) - I doubt he was able to do anything else but turn his feelings
off. I don't know if the dalmation he adopts in the second series is in the
novels but it strikes me as a sign that there *are* feelings there - just
incredibly well hidden.
As for Reinhardt making his own decisions - precisely. He has always been
portrayed as someone capable of doing great good or great harm. Which he
finally chose had to be up to him.
