Well, I freely admit that imagination creates images of people that aren't
necessarily what the author intended, (I've seen readers of my own amateur
stuff do much the same) so I won't argue the point of Oberstein being
capable of being so much more. As usual, I've managed to take a liking to a
character even the writer wasn't as interested in and am left creating my
own version of reality. But then, I think we all do that.

Re notes on book VIII, I really wish the books were available in english. I
know there's that one translation someone's been working on on the web, but
he hasn't gotten past first chapter of book II (I think). As it is, I'm
operating on just the information from the anime, which doesn't necessarily
include internal reactions.

Re LoGH being Wagnerian, I couldn't agree more. I'm not sure if Tanaka
intended it so. It wouldn't surprise me if he did, though. I've noticed that
the very best writers are the ones who read and not just in the genre
they're writing in. (Dorothy Sayers comes to mind).

Anyway, thanks on cluing me in on book info. As well as what to call you,
Reinhard-Seigfried. I don't know why I didn't notice your signature at the
end of your earlier letters.
