i've wondered about that too. you know, i've seen decorations on
military uniforms (especially on admirals and officers from foreign
countries) like collars and shoulder boards that looked so glittery or
shiny that they looked like precious metal. however, it was made of fabric
or gold thread. but they were still pretty stiff, i think.

but if it is made of metal, then i guess that's even more weight on the
admiral's shoulders, huh?

in the empire, people always seem to put "looking cool" above all else.
[not a spoiler: ] in the third series, there's a scene where a junior
officer and his detachment of guards are freezing in the cold. they are
shivering and rubbing their arms to keep warm, but instinctively snap to
attention at just the moment that reinhard's door opens. from then on,
everything is snap-to, as though the cold is inconsequential.
