money and economics in LoGH

a question i had,

does anyone have any idea what they use for money in the empire and the
alliance? i've seen what looks like gold coinage in the empire (most of
the commoners seem to lead a remarkably low-tech existence). but in the
alliance, we see people use what seem to be cash/debit cards.

dusty attenborough, for example, slips a card into a coffee vending
machine in one episode. however, we don't see him take it back out, so
that *could* have been a bill of some kind (or a ration card, or even
someone else's car that he swiped... would you put it past him? ^_-), but i
don't know.

i like how, in the middle of the first TV series, lebello argues
against the war and the plans to invade the empire on the grounds that the
alliance economy can hardly stand it. for once, it's shown that a nation's
ability to wage war is limited by its *economy*. who'd have thought that
it cost any money or manpower to build space fleets?!!
