[admin] weird email happenings

Fellow LoGH list members,

Some funky things have been happening with the mailing list lately. There
have been phantom unsubscribings, phantom subscribings, and lots of
bounced emails (which only I get to see, joy).

Apparently, here is what happened: The machine running the majordomo
program here at soda.csua.berkeley.edu broke down and had to be rebooted.
Part of the problem was a hard disk failure, and so the tape backups were
reloaded. As a result, the older version of the subscriber-list files
which had been backed up replaced the newer updated file thus changes to
the list in the last 5-7 days may have been written over. That explains
why some of you who were not on the list before the backup took place and
subscribed since were "removed" from the list.

So, if you've subscribed or unsubscribed in the last week or so, and
are unsure of your status, you might want to consider re-doing your
action. Ming, could you put a note about this on the archive page, so that
people currently not on the list can get the word?

Also, while I'm at it, I've been getting a lot of "user unknown" emails
caused by accounts which have expired. If you change an email address,
please take the time to unsubscribe from your old address.

Thanks,
-Hank
