Okay first off, I'll deal with the so-called "ethics" of fansubbing. Technically,. once the rights to a series or movies (or both) have been picked up and announced by a company, it's in the ethical interest for all fansubbers and distributors to immediately cease all distribution of the show. This is obviously to encourage buying the commercial copy when it comes out and hypothetically although we don't all do it, we're all supposed to ditch our fansubs and purchase said copy once it appears to support the commercial spread of anime. So, do I agree with fansubbing? Definitely yes because, a LOT of shows in my opinion would have NEVER seen the light of western society had they not been fansubbed first. Fushigi Yuugi is a classic example of this as are others. In the case of LOGH, I would LOVE to see all 110 episodes, the OAV's and the movies subbed. Do I think this is possible? That depends on the availability of translators, willingness of those who are fansubbing and likely, the needed monetary support to make such a project come to fruition. The problem I have been seeing after talking with Vegita-sama and a few times with Sue Shambaugh is, the enormity of this project is compounded by the very "adult" speech used in LOGH. Unlike Sailor Moon or some other shoujo type shows which use relatively easy (for some) to translate language, LOGH is for an older crowd. There's a lot of dialogue that is essential to plots to describe attacks, defenses, or general plots within plots etc. This is FAR more difficult to translate than some show like Sailor Moon and I've been told it's made some translators take one look and say "no way" when they realized what was involved. When I attended the AX panel this summer on LOGH, I was pleased to hear that if there was enough demand for LOGH, Tokuma "might possibly" dub the series (such as the test dubs we were able to view) and make it available for us to order direct from Japan IF no company over here chooses to acquire it. I would think that would be a more likely scenario than some company here in the US picking it up. It's too long and involved a series and only seems to hold the attention of those of us intelligent enough to understand and truly appreciate it (grin) That being the case, I firmly believe that maybe we might all want to consider that first possibility..getting a HUGE petition or effort together to show Tokuma that we WANT them to dub it..or put it on DVD so we can have a choice of sub or dub...and allow us to order it directly from Japan. This would be expensive for us and for them to do it but, if they knew they had the market for it here to cover such a cost..they may very well do it. I don't think they would have hinted at that if it wasn't in the back of their minds somewhere. If someone here "does" successfully fansub ALL of LOGH..series, movies, and OAV's..well then, they may not bother. Currently though unless someone truly pulls that off, it's hard to say what will happen. Whoever can do it has my full support and I salute them for completing what in my opinion is an almost impossible task. :) Daniel :) --------------D0EC6BD2118E6C8E0F07CBFD Content-Type: text/html; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bitShayne Pinnace wrote:
