Re: [LoGH] possible spoiler warning?

Mittermeyer's flagship must be called "Waerewolf"
instead of "Beowulf". In the novel, it is the only
flagship whose name is given in kanji (All other
kanji names are inventions in the anime. The author
never named Lutz's or Ulanf's flagships in the novel.
Forget Salamander or Bang-Goo and the small kanji characters in the
titles.), so there is no possibility
of the author's making any transliteration mistake.
Now I do not speak any Japanese except for a few
hellos and good-byes. But I have seen these 2
kanji characters ("man"-or-"person" and "wolf" as
mentioned by Hank Wong) combined in the same order
in other works. Judging from their content, that
combination cannot mean anything other than "werewolf".

The reason you heard something like "Beowulf" in the
LoGH panel is that the sound "we" was substituted
by the sound "be". In the Japanese language, the
sounds "we"/"ve" and "wi"/"vi" are missing. When
adopting a foreign word with "we"/"ve" and "wi"/"vi"
sounds, these sounds are substitiuted by Japanese
"be" and "bi". So "Waerewolf" or "werewolf" becomes
"be-i-o-wa-ru-fu" when transliterated, which sounds
like "Beowulf". Other examples are "vitamin" and
"elevator". In Japanese they sound like "BI-ta-mi-n"
and "e-re-BE-ta".

This rule does not apply to proper nouns where the
sounds "we"/"ve" and "wi"/"vi" are denoted by the
"takuon"(?) of the letter "u" combined with "e" or
"i". I do not know what these sound like but you
can find examples in "Westland" (episode no. 23)
and "Westpfale" (episodes no. 1 & 9).
