No, the 2nd movie is not a rehash of the first. If anything it is a rehash of
the first 2 episodes of the series, with the Astarte battle. There are some
slight differences between the 2 versions and I am told the movie version is
closer to the description in the book. The main point of the movie was the
stuff that happened between the first movie at Tiamat and the beginning of the
series. But in this recap of Astarte I too was a little disappointed at the
lack of new material.

However to me this is almost made up for by the absolutely beautiful rendition
of the Jean Paul Robert's proposal to Jessica and Yang's reactions, done
entirely without dialog and leaving the action and facial expressions to
capture the meaning. I thought that was absolutely beautiful. I would rather
have seen more character stuff like that than the recap space battle.
