  You can live without a cartoid or jugular vein (in fact you can lose
both viens although not at the same time).  There are two blood supplies
to the brain the cartoid system and the vertibral system.
  According to the Chair of the Head & Neck course at University of
Washington Medical School (who I actually asked) he shouldn't have dead
from that wound; EXPECT from a lose of blood (ie. hypovolumic shock).
  I don't remember if Kircheis was chest shot was to the heart thou?  I
seem to remember it being on the right.  If it hit the subclavian(sp) that
would cause massive internal bleeding and would kill him.

  Of course the real reason Kircheis died is because he HAD to at that
point of the story ^_^
